Language is used for all kinds of different purposes and is aimed at different people. Ordinary language between a few speakers is different from the cultivated language that reaches a wider audience. In formal language itself, there are many distinctions. In the case of English, one may ask what is the difference between learn business English and literary English.
These two kinds of English can be described in the following way. If English is being used for business purposes, then it is practical in nature. The goal is to talk about how to make money. If English is being used in a literary way, then it is the opposite. It is concerned with matters of an artistic or idealistic nature.
People who use business English will use a vocabulary that is appropriate to discuss financial affairs. There will be many terms of a technical nature from accounting and economics that the ordinary person may not understand. In literary English, this kind of terminology will be largely absent, yet there will be a larger range of diction since it can be used to describe a much wider field which encompasses almost anything unrelated to business.
There are also some key stylistic differences. Literary English can be more refined, with longer sentences. The way that ideas are expressed is almost as important as the ideas themselves. But in business English, the sentences will be more simple, since the main goal is to get the point across as easily as easily as possible.
For the most part, those who use English in a literary manner will be a native speaker of the language, or if this is not the case, they will have an advanced knowledge of it. But with business English, the individual might only be able to communicate on a very basic level. Talking business does not require that the person speaking have a lot of experience in the English language.
Statistics figure prominently when English is used to discuss financial matters, making it more analytical. For the most part, it is trying to describe something, or when it tries to make an argument it uses numbers. This is not the case in literary English, which is more subjective and appeals to the emotions more than to logic.
Both of these kinds of English have increased in popularity over the past century. Because the world is more global, with ideas and commerce travelling more readily between countries, people will use English for a variety of reasons since it is a dominant language. People who want to do business with western countries will have to speak English, and people who want to watch popular English movies and shows will have to be fluent in the language.
English has been the most popular language in the world for more than a century. It has been used to communicate all kinds of ideas. The global nature of the world economy means that the language will continue to be used to discuss business. And popular culture will allow the literary form of the language to flourish.
